The Door Step Murder, the murder of Alistair Wilson.
A podcast recommendation that covers the murder of Alistair Wilson in Nairn and latest developments in the case.
Say what you like about the BBC (with it’s recent scandals) but it’s crime reporters, particularly those in Scotland, make dam good true crime podcasts. One of the first podcasts I ever listened to was The Doorstep Murder by Fiona Walker.
The Doorstep Murder podcast covers the murder of Alistair Wilson which took place in Nairn, Scotland, on the 28th of November 2004. Alistair Wilson, a 30-year-old banker, was shot dead on the doorstep of his own home in the Scottish coastal town of Nairn while he was speaking to an unidentified man who had come to the door asking for him by name.
The assailant, described as a stocky man wearing a dark jacket and baseball cap, handed Alistair a blue envelope (with the word PAUL written on it) before shooting him three times at close range. Alistair's wife, Veronica, was inside the house at the time of the shooting having initially answered the door to the attacker while Alistair was upstairs putting their boys to bed.
Despite extensive investigations by the police, the case remains unsolved, and the motive behind the murder remains unclear. Various theories and speculations have been put forward, but no conclusive evidence has led to an arrest in the case. The murder of Alistair Wilson continues to be one of Scotland's most high-profile unsolved crimes, leaving the family and community seeking answers and justice for his untimely death.
In the The Doorstep Murder podcast, Fiona Walker explores in depth some of the theories that surround this case and speaks directly with Alistair's wife, Veronica. The most recent episode in September 2022 covers the latest development in the case:
Doorstep murder: Police have new man in sights over banker shooting
In September of 2022, Police Scotland released a somewhat unusual update relating to the case. The update stated that detectives now believed the most likely motive for the shooting centred around Alistair's objections to a decking area built in the car park of the Havelock Hotel across the road from his home in Nairn. Police Scotland and the BBC appear to refer directly to a particular suspect but stop short of providing a name.
An interesting article then appeared in the Daily Record in June 2023 reporting that the suspect in question had been jailed for an unrelated drug offence.

Despite numerous theories and extensive investigations by Police Scotland, the case officially remains unsolved. With these latest developments and a suspect in their sights, are Police Scotland one step further to solving the murder of Alistair Wilson?
